More environmental squee

Last night, I was supposed to go to a fund raiser for Senator Boxer, with super-special guest Vice President Al Gore. I was really excited to come back here and tell you all about it, but, then, of course, it got canceled.

So I spent yesterday in a bit of a mood. That is, until my husband snapped me out of it, saying, "You do realize he's probably accepting the Nobel Peace Prize?"

And, whaddayaknow?

WASHINGTON D.C. – Sen. John Kerry congratulated Vice President Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for winning the Nobel Peace Prize today.

“This is not only an incredibly well deserved honor for Vice President Gore, it reflects a global awakening to the urgency of taking action on global climate change. Way back when it wasn't easy, Al Gore began criss-crossing the country and the planet to help bring the science of climate change to people everywhere in a compelling way. He's been dogged and tenacious, and with the IPCC he's stood up for the truth against the deniers and the dividers who want to delay action and risk global catastrophe. Their efforts have rightfully been recognized with the highest honor the world community can bestow on those who help define and meet the great challenges of our time.”

This is so, so cool. I'd probably embarrass myself if I admitted how many times, in this blogging life, I have been tempted to post, "Dear Something Good: Please happen, now. Love, dc."

Well, it happened. Thanks, Something Good!

"Now, I wouldn't presume to tell a woman what a woman ought to think…."

I really should offer brownie points and emails heavy with super-hot pics of a certain senator a bunch of us like to the first person who can finish that lyric.

Anyway, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month that, for me, jumped the shark last year when women my age and younger started taking pictures of themselves in lacy black bras and posting them to their flickr accounts under titles like - and I am not making this up - "Boobie Awareness Month."

Because, really, that's the big hurdle we face in the area of women's health - getting people to notice we have boobs.

So today I was kind of intrigued when I saw Think Before You Pink, which is not, as the title may suggest, a caution against going too crazy with the fun scissors, but an indictment of the cause-marketing campaigns that make us feel like we're curing cancer, when really we're just buying a bunch of pink stuff.

As somebody who would buy a bunch of pink stuff anyway ("I Enjoy Being a Girl" made the short list when I was choosing a theme song, but, in the end, it didn't make a strong enough case), I'm not sure if it's fair to criticize somebody for buying a pink stand mixer instead of a white or black one. But I am super impressed with the fact that the site's front page contains a link to information on Cosmetics Companies and Breast Cancer, which is a huge Women's Health and the Environment issue.

So check it out, and if you're still looking to put a little pink in your day (and why wouldn't you be?) avoid those containing icky phalates and parabens - you'll need to keep yourself healthy to Kerry On!

Blog Action Day is October 15

wljk has registered to participate in Blog Action Day!

What is Blog Action Day?

From the website:

On October 15th, bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind - the environment. Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic. Our aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future.

Blog Action Day is about MASS participation. That means we need you! Here are 3 ways to participate:

* Post on your blog relating to the environment on Blog Action Day
* Donate your day’s earnings to an environmental charity
* Promote Blog Action Day around the web

We're in good company, too - I just saw that Windsurfing Paradise has also signed up.

Dry, tangentially-related-to-JK humor aside, it's been a great few months of being a sort of cheerleader for all of JK's environmental efforts.

So Blog Action Day will be, if not a big departure from our usual fare, a great honor and a lot of fun.
