NH mini-roundup

I haven't been following the primaries too closely, because, well, I don't care that much, but a couple of stories have come out this weekend that pertain not only to our top three celebridates* actually campaigning there, but to the tall guy pictured in the sidebar.

First, you all know about that dude O'Reilly shoved, but did you know the dude in question was our own Marvin Nicholson? JK's former bodyman, the Charlie to JK's Jed Bartlett? The whole thing makes me wonder of O'Reilly knew he was dealing with a particularly nice guy. Who calls a 6'8" beef bus "low class" unless they know for sure it's not going to result in a smackdown?

Anyway, props to Marvin for keeping his cool, and making fun of O'Reilly after the fact.

And props to The Dem Daily for sharing the thoughts of Meredith Chaiken, another former staffer of JK's:

In 2004, my anger with George W. Bush directed my support for Kerry: I thought he was most capable of undercutting Bush's monopoly on patriotism and realigning independents with his foreign policy heft.

Today, instead of analyzing the differences between the Democratic candidates and a Republican incumbent, Democrats are looking at the differences within our party, and the differences are largely in the area of leadership. I don't yet know whether I prefer a leader who will advance change incrementally or go for sweeping upheaval; someone who will speak for those without advocates or for everyone. Or perhaps there's something else that separates the candidates that I'm still missing entirely.

And finally, if you want to stroll down memory lane, check out this op-ed from Mary Beth Cahill.

*By celebridates, I do mean celebrity candidates, not dates with celebrities. Dating a celebrity is just silly.

Well! That happened.

So, the Iowa Caucuses have done their thing, and it looks like Senator Obama is a step closer to becoming our Dem nominee.

When I saw the results, I surprised the hell out of myself and almost cried. (In a good way.)

I've had a hard time committing to any candidate up to this point, and I don't think 940 Iowans are going to change that. And it's been frustrating to watch so much of the media reporting on the good Senator's actions through the haze of their collective schoolgirl crush. (Before you call me a hypocrite, remember, I don't get any pay for this, and I've never claimed to have authority on anything other than the Vineyard Vines catalog.)

But if you want to look on the sunny side of this, and I almost always do, there are a lot of people in my life who have a really sincere appreciation for Senator Obama and his ideas. I can't really say that about other candidates in the running right now. And because I know what it's like to have that kind of belief in somebody you've never even met, I can't help feeling really, really happy for the Obama fans today.

No matter what we feel about what happened yesterday, we've all got to Kerry On together. So let's try to do it with some joy in our hearts.
